Authentic Ethiopian fare is present in Midwood thanks to the team behind Abugida Ethiopian Cafe & Restaurant. Injera, a spongy flatbread, is used in place of utensils, to scoop up lamb and beef tibs (cubed beef sauteed in vegetables and Ethiopian spiced butter), gomen (Ethiopian collard greens), and other specialties. At the end of the meal, guests can continue to soak up the ambiance while sipping freshly brewed coffee—poured tableside. “I’m just thankful that this many years later that people still care and people are still giving us a chance to do what we love doing and I appreciate and we’re thankful for it,” he shared. Good Charlotte still care, they very much do, and so do their fans. In this edition of Gear Factor, powered by Sweetwater, Good Charlotte's Billy Martin takes us through some of his favorite riffs, both from his own band and other acts, while revisiting the music that started it all for him.

The menu and atmosphere of a restaurant may define its public perception, but it’s the people behind the operation who become the heart and soul of the entire entity. Lang Van’s owner Dan Nguyen is well-known and loved in the community, and her passion for serving Vietnamese dishes is equally matched by her uncanny memory for customers and their orders. If you once ordered pho, spring rolls, or the vermicelli noodle dish Bun Bo Xao, there’s a good chance she’ll remember.

Billy Martin is an American musician best known as the guitarist and keyboardist of the pop punk band Good Charlotte. It goes without saying that trying to make it big as a musician isn't all fun and games. For the teenagers who made up Good Charlotte, opting not to attend college was part of that quest for fame, but instead of simply playing a ton of gigs and working menial jobs to make ends meet in the meantime, the boys did their fair share of reading. But instead of immersing themselves in the true stories of their favorite musicians, they were researching how to promote their band and how to get noticed by the record labels. MARTIN Early on, we tried to do that pop-punk thing because I think it was the easiest genre to put Good Charlotte into.

When Kindred first opened in Davidson in 2015, the cult-favorite dish was milk bread —  pans of golden rolls based on a Japanese baking technique. It was such a hit, it became the inspiration for the Kindreds’ breakfast and brunch cafe, Milkbread, first in Davidson and now at their stylish reimagining of the classic Central Avenue Dairy Queen in Plaza Midwood. Customers can sit down at the Davidson location, while the Plaza Midwood spot is a walk-up counter with limited outdoor seating. The doughnuts and cinnamon rolls, along with the crispy chicken sandwiches, prove that Milkbread has staying power.

Good Charlotte’s first five albums were released on major labels (the first four were released on Epic / Daylight; Cardiology was released on Capitol); post-hiatus, Youth Authority was released independently on MDDN. For Generation Rx, they’ve partnered with BMG – their first major label release in eight years. After over ten years of being in a band, Martin and the rest of Good Charlotte have seen it all. So when a tour like this came around, Martin and his bandmates knew it wouldn’t bring anything the boys haven’t heard or seen before. Southerners know a little pimiento cheese makes everything better, and Letty’s on Shamrock’s grilled pimiento cheeseburger is a true testament to that statement. The restaurant offers traditional Southern items as well as bistro‑style fare—all served in a casual, friendly atmosphere in the middle of the Plaza‑Midwood neighborhood.

Gretsch Jim Dandy Dread review – is this really the best cheap acoustic guitar you can buy right now?

I lose a lot of the clarity on the Mesa when its really bassy and heavy, but I like that. So the Bad Cat is sort of my less gainy distortion sound to make up for clarity. The second Bad Cat is just for my clean tone and that one is set with bass on 6, mids at 6, treble at about 6 or 7, then volume at 3. Vogel is currently employed by the Phoenix Suns, but should the rumor mill prove true, that may not be the case for very long. He is feeling the heat following Phoenix's own early playoff exit. If Vogel ends up available, the Lakers would be wise to go after him.

MADDEN All of this subject matter is stuff we’ve dealt with in our childhoods, our youth or our adult life. And we felt a lot of these conversations needed to be normalized, so that someone could turn to their friend and go, “Yeah, I struggle with depression,” and not have that be an uncomfortable conversation. I think so many people have grown up with violence in their homes, with mental illness in their homes, with drugs in their homes. Good Charlotte is an American rock band from Waldorf, Maryland, formed in 1995. Since 2005, the band's lineup has consisted of Joel Madden (lead vocals), Benji Madden (guitar, vocals), Paul Thomas (bass), Billy Martin (guitar, keyboards), and Dean Butterworth (drums, percussion).

MADDEN Well, when we came out, it was ’98, ’99, and music at that time felt very manufactured. To me, the music that felt the realest was what the punk bands were doing, and so that was what we gravitated toward. I think our instincts were that we could only relate to shit where it felt like the person singing it had lived it. So we started playing with all the punk bands and the pop-punk bands because that was where we felt comfortable. I think we had a lot of that spirit and shared some similar core values, but at the same time I was inspired by, you know, Cash Money and everything that was going on in that rap scene.

One thing that hasn’t turned into a disaster on stage is Martin’s band’s surprising opening slot on pop-megastar Justin Timberlake’s Future Sex/Love Show tour that has only recently made its way back to North America. While many die-hard Good Charlotte fans may have been scratching their heads at such a venture, Martin claims a lot of the planning came naturally, considering that he and his bandmates love to — remember — try new things. The band made multiple U.S. and international TV appearances in support of the album.

The original Counter, with themed tasting menus focused on cutting-edge culinary inspirations, opened in commissary space the City Kitch on Charlotte’s Westside in 2020 and held on, pandemic-be-damned, through 2022. Hart took a short break and has reopened in an elegant space on West Morehead Street that’s tucked in next to Hart’s wine bar, Biblio. The experience isn’t cheap — $175 for 10-course menus and $235 for 14 courses (most courses have more than one item, pushing the number of creations to as high as 50 bits and bites), and wine pairings can add $100 to $300. But it’s regularly selling out, proving that Charlotte eaters are willing to go all in on an experience. Is there a serious diner in the country who hasn’t heard the raves for multiple James Beard-nominated chef Greg Collier and his wife Subrina?
